$3 Three Dollars Gold NGC AU58 CAC – Although
there are a few gem+ pieces known of this issues, the
scarcity of this issue in upper AU and Mint State should
not be estimated. Only 5,559 pieces were produced for
circulation, although the denomination had always been
unpopular and was virtually nowhere to be seen at the
start of the Civil War. That Civil War had a large influence
on this and subsequent issues, which were melted in
large quantities, never leaving the Mint.
Because of the above circumstances,
this issue is very popular and examples are quickly
absorbed in the market. Because of this, and the fact
that this series has quickly gained popularity, make
every original example to be carefully considered. Many
high grade pieces have been cleaned, were weakly struck
or show other problems and/or damaging, making original
pieces in the distinct minority.
This is one of those scarce original
pieces of this popular issue, stickered by CAC as such.
Sharply struck, abundant in luster and with only some
minor wear accounting for the grade. Both sides exhibit
a fresh orange-yellow gold color. Die lines, as struck,
are visible in the fields but do not distract from the
virtually flawless fields exhibiting only a few minor
hits. A great coin at an excellent collector prize!
