1608 Germany Taler, NGC XF45. Brunswick Wolfenbuttel DAV-6285 GOSLAR, Wildman. KM 7. This German taler of 1608 shows colors of gun-metal blue-gray in the fields. Its devices are outlined in dark tan with darker patina at the border. The toning and colors attest to the coins originality. The surfaces are extremely clean for the grade with no notable abrasion marks or other distractions. Just a touch of wear on the obverses high points and the right reverse keep this piece from an AU grade. 
 
The coin is a product of the Zellerfeld mint which was operated by Heinrich Oeckeler, the mint master who also worked at the Goslar mint. The type was made at both mints from 1601 to 1613. Popular in Brunswick and Hanover at the time, the wild man design appeared on many different issues of talers.
 
The wild man, also wildman, is a mythical figure that appears in the artwork and literature of medieval Europe. It is comparable to a satyr in classical mythology and the Roman god of the woodlands. The defining characteristic of the figure is its wildness. From the 12th century they were depicted as being covered with hair. They appear as a supporter for the heraldic coats of arms, especially in Germany well into the 16th century.
