1793 G.Brit D&H-242 1/2P Warwickshire Conventry, E: Payable in Bedworth, NGC XF45 BN. 1793 GB Lady Godiva Conder Token D&H-242 Halfpenny. This lightly circulated token is brown with grey, green, orange, and blue highlights. The surfaces are clean and the strike is average with some weakness on the horse’s right leg and on the bottom right of the castle. The edge says PAYABLE AT BEDWORTH HINKLEY OR NUNEATON.
The design for this token shows Lady Godiva riding naked through the streets of Coventry because the people were suffering under the taxes imposed by her husband. After appealing to him many times to lower them, he said he would do so if she would strip naked and ride through the city. A voyeur, named “Peeping Tom” was struck blind or dead, depending on which version of the story one reads, because he disobeyed the proclamation not to look at her.
