1844-O Eagle (1844-O $10) NGC AU58. From an original mintage of 118,700, this high-end circulated eagle from the New Orleans Mint is one of many gold coins from that Mint which are hard to find in uncirculated condition. Heavy circulation took its toll on this and many other issues, and for some dates uncirculated examples are virtually unknown to exist. While that is not the case with the present date, uncirculated 1844-O ten dollar gold pieces are very difficult to find, and About Uncirculated coins are usually the highest one should be able to find, after intensive searching. Before the discovery of a number of shipwrecks which yielded some example of this issue, About Uncirculated issues were considered to be extremely rare, but a limited supply has recently come available on the market. By now, however, these have been fully absorbed in the marked and offerings remain scarce.

Better struck than average, the present example only displays some minor striking weakness above the ear of Liberty on the obverse. All other features are boldly impressed, especially so for a New Orleans minted coin. Moderate frosty surfaces hide some of the fresh luster, visible on nearly every part of this coin, on both sides. The surfaces are moderately bagmarked, especially so on the reverse but that is a regular encountered problem of this issue. The reverse is relatively clean, with only a few marks showing in the fields above the eagle. Overall, this coin has excellent eye-appeal and is very close to a rare Mint State grade. This coin has been certified by NGC in a new holder.
