1848-O Eagle (1848-O $10) NGC AU53. This branch mint 1848-O Gold Eagle shows about equal amounts of subdued mint luster within the devices of both sides. There is slight wear on the high points of the design and light abrasion as well as some marks in the obverse field near stars 4 and 5. There are also some scratches on the reverse above the eagle and above N and D. The strike is strong on the reverse and somewhat less so on the obverse. The heraldic eagle on the reverse of this coin shows a correction that its designer Christian Gobrecht made. The prior issue, designed by Robert Scot, had the arrows in the wrong talon, portraying a belligerent young country. Gobrecht placed the olive branch in the eagle’s right talon, where it should have been.
With the new design of the eagle, coinage was resumed because the size, weight, and fineness were reduced so that the coins were not intrinsically worth more than their denominated value.
The original mintage of this coin is 35,850. In its population report NGC shows a total of 171 coins is all grades.
