More toning is seen closer to the rim, especially so on the obverse. The coin is sliver-grey, very light blue-grey, and tan. The rims on both sides are full, and more than three letters of LIBERTY show, confirming the grade. The surfaces are hard, clean, and free of distractions.
The 1860-O is a Variety 1 type with a weight standard of Variety 2, 12.44 grams. The various varieties of the Liberty Seated half dollar were used mostly to show changes in weight. The 1860-O half dollars were the last struck exclusively for the United States of America prior to the Civil War.
Coins dated 1861-O were struck for the Federal government, the State of Louisiana after it seceded from the Union, and the Confederate States of America. However, it is impossible to tell under which authority the coin was struck.
