1861 1C Bashlow Restrike Token, NGC MS67. This Confederate token restrike gleams with bright mint luster on both sides. The obverse shows dark tan and brown peripheral toning through the legend with a mixture of light colors in the field and the head of Liberty. The reverse shows a similar pattern of dark periphery except for the lower left quadrant. The strike is strong on the reverse and weak on the obverse. The token was struck from defaced dies, which are especially prominent on the reverse. The Confederate token was originally designed by Robert Lovett, Jr. In 1961 Robert Bashlow obtained the dies for this token, which by then were rusted and defaced, and struck copies for the Confederate centenary. The Bashlow restrikes in various metals all show lumps, ridges, die cracks, and rust marks, which make them distinct from earlier coinage and restrikes.
