1881-CC Eagle (1881-CC $10) PCGS AU50 CAC. Remnants of mint luster are seen within the devices of this branch mint 1881-CC Eagle. Surface abrasion and light wear account for the grade of AU50, which is confirmed by CAC. The strike is strong with details that are not affected by wear clearly observable.
This relatively low mintage coin is the second type for the Coronet Head with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST added to the banner above the eagle in 1866. The Secretary of the Treasury, Salmon Chase, in response to pressure from the Reverend Mark Richards Watkinson of Ridleyville, Pennsylvania recommended that the motto be added. Watkinson suggested that it be “God, Liberty, Law.” Chase asked Mint Director James Pollock to suggest several mottos. He suggested, “Our Trust Is In God," "Our God And Our Country," "God And Our Country," and "God Our Trust." The phrase “In God We Trust” that Chase chose is a somewhat subtle reminder that the Union felt it was on God’s side with respect to slavery.
In its population report CAC shows 2 in AU50 with 7 better. At PCGS a total of 265 have been certified in all grades.
