1884-CC $20 (1884-CC Double Eagle) NGC XF45 CAC. With its original surfaces and excellent eye-appeal, this Carson City 1884-CC Double Eagle from the 1880s would serve as an ideal representative in a type set of coinage struck at this fabled Mint in Nevada. Like virtually every issue, and in particular gold issue that was struck at this Mint, this twenty dollar gold piece had a relatively low mintage.
A total of 81,139 coins were struck in this year, intended for circulation, and that is where most ended up. As such, higher graded coins with excellent eye-appeal are scarce, as many survivors have subsequently been cleaned or damaged. Finding a nice example such as the present piece might take some time to search, but once found, it will represent this fabled metal, denomination and gold in a combination that is seldom found at this price level.
Despite the Extremely-Fine grade that NGC gave this coin, both sides feature nearly full detail. Especially noteworthy is the hair detail of Liberty on the obverse, with many of the strains still visible with virtually now wear noted. Both sides have some toned surfaces on the highest points, an indication of the originality of this coin.
Furthermore, the natural golden coloration that is seen on both sides confirms its status as a scarce circulated coin, with additionally, excellent eye-appeal. In all, this is a very nice coin which shall please even the fussiest of buyer, certified by NGC in a new holder and sporting a CAC approved sticker to which only 7 other 1884-CC's have attained in this grade.
