1899 Double Eagle (1899 $20) NGC MS60 CAC. A sharp strike and bright mint luster characterize this mint state 1899 Double Eagle. Abrasion marks on both sides and a small scrape in the reverse field keep this 1899 Double Eagle coin from a higher mint state grade. Designed by James B. Longacre, the double eagle uses the coronet motif seen in wide use in American coinage. Called the Liberty Head, the double eagle shows Liberty in profile facing left.
Some hair flows down her neck and the rest is tied tightly behind her head. She wears a LIBERTY inscribed coronet and is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars with the date below. The reverse shows a heraldic eagle with added double ribbons, one on each side of the shield. The left is inscribed E PLURIBUS and the right UNUM. The additions of these ribbons symbolized the new denomination, the double eagle.
The 1899 is a Type 3 because the motto IN GOD WE TRUST has been added and the denomination has been changed from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.
With its relatively high mintage, the 1899 double eagle is an excellent choice for a type set of United States coins or a gold type set. This is the only MS-60 graded 1899 Double Eagle that has been approved by CAC ( Collectors Acceptance Corp ) as of 3/11/11.
