1994 China G25Y Unicorn (1993 China Gold 25 Yuan) NGC PF69 UCAM, (KM # 678). Two unicorns are portrayed on this 25 Yuan proof ultra cameo coin. The coin has virtually no imperfections and a full strike, as expected for a proof 69. The fields have black mirrors, and the devices are frosted. The obverse of the coin shows a figure riding on an Eastern unicorn with the date below.
The Eastern unicorn, also called the Qilin or Kirin is a mythical hoofed Chinese creature that is seen is various East Asian cultures. It is said to be a good omen and that it brings serenity or prosperity. It is actually a misnomer to call it a unicorn since it is a chimerical animal. The reverse shows a Western style unicorn, the denomination to the left, and rose sprays below. The Western style unicorn has a horn on its forehead, a billy-goat beard, a lion’s tail, and cloven hooves. It is usually portrayed as being good, solitary, and always mysterious and beautiful.
The coin weighs 7.7758 grams, and is made from 0.9990 Gold. The actual gold weight is 0.2497 ounces. The mintage for this coin is 5,100. In its population report NGC shows 59 at PF69 UCAM with 2 better.
