1900 Quarter (1900 25C) Mint Error NGC AU Details. Struck 10% off Center. Despite the fact that this coin was improperly cleaned and toned, it is rare because it was struck off center. Its toning is a mixture of light and dark grey with highlights of lavender on both sides. The obverse is free of contact marks, which are few on the reverse. They are mainly on and under the eagle’s left wing and tail feathers. The coin is fully struck on both sides and probably would have been graded mint state had it not been mishandled.
An off center strike occurs when the planchet is not sitting securely in the collar in the coining chamber and moves before being struck. This coin is struck 10 % off center at 1:00. All errors on Barber coins are desirable, and this one is particularly so because it represents a type of error on a type coin with a turn-of-the-century date. |
