1861 Half Dollar NGC AU58. The Seated Half Dollar
series, minted from 1839 to 1891 is a very difficult
set to complete in any grade. Some of the issues are
so rare that every appearance is a major headline
in numismatic journals. Others are extremely condition
rarities, unknown or nearly so in uncirculated condition,
and very rare in the higher circulated rates. Others
are found on the market with some frequency, but original
examples are scarce for virtually every issue. Whatever
their status is, however, every coin of this series
will tell part of the story that the 19th century
was.
The coin we presently offer was minted in the first
year of the American Civil War, and has remained in
original condition since those dark dates. Soon after
the Civil War broke out circulation of gold and silver
coins stopped, because of massive hoarding, and perhaps
that’s the reason that this coin has remained
to exist in such wonderful condition. Highlighted
by steel-gray surfaces, with various colors in the
fields, and vibrant luster under the toning. Both
sides are sharply struck, with only minimal marks
on the surfaces of the coins. Excellent eye-appeal
and the perfect coin for a type set of American Civil
War coinage.
