1870 10C (J-831, high R-6) PCGS PR-64 – An exceptional good looking fantasy piece, using a new Liberty seated obverse designed by William Barber and a regular dime reverse die. Struck for the exclusive sale to collectors, these are much less common than the regular Standard silver issues from the same era.

By the early 1870’s, numismatics had become a popular pastime in the United States. Thanks to new numismatic periodicals, we now have a wide array of different fantasy pattern pieces, often superior to the coin designs found on regular coinage. A full set however, is still a very big accomplishment, as these issues can not be considered to be easily available. Of this particular issue, approximately 12 to 15 pieces are known in all grades, of which a number lack any originality.

With subdued toning over mirrored fields, this coin has good eye-appeal. Both sides are toned to various shades, including green, orange and light rose. The fields are clean from any hits, and in terms of hairlines this coin is much better than usually encountered. A great coin for anyone seeking an example of this popular design, executed by Chief engraver William Barber, and struck in silver with a reeded edge.
