Lovely
and original Hawaiian dollar in about uncirculated,
virtually choice. Beautiful color! Aside from the proof-only
eighth-dollar, the dollar is the most desirable of the
1883 Hawaii denominations. Although 500,000 pieces were
struck, most were melted to reclaim their bullion content
once the Hawaiian Islands became a U.S. territory. For
the Hawaii dollar or dala, Breen states in his 1988
Encyclopedia that 453,622 pieces were melted, leaving
a maximum of 46,378 pieces to represent the one-year
type.
