1788 New Jersey, Head Right (Maris 67-V, R-1) NGC MS61.  Any true colonial coin, which circulated in the colonies and newly found country when the United States Mint was not in existence yet, is a rarity in mint state. As one can imagine, the new country was in urgent need of its own money, or any money at all. Thus, the states that authorized coinages themselves made sure those coppers circulate extensively. Mintages were fairly large but circulation of copper coin was heavy to support the economy of the young nation. This coin made sure that the United States could grow to a powerful nation.

This is an example of Maris-67, designated in the new Bowers book on colonial coinage as W-5510. While it is considered by him to be the most available variety of the year, it is only priced up to AU-50. This certainly indicates the scarcity of this variety in uncirculated condition as we presently offer here. In fact, this issue, due to the heavy circulation, is scarcer than some of the other issues of this year, some of which multiple mint state coins exist for some varieties.

The coin we presently offer is a true mint state coin, with a sharp strike and premium, original surfaces that have become increasingly hard to find on early copper coins. Glossy, even brown color is seen on both sides and looks very pretty in hand. No major marks are noticed, except a few minor hits that are not distracting at all. This coin has been certified by NGC in a new holder and sure is to please the specialist of state coinage, or anyone who wishes to own a coin from America’s 18th century.

Happy Collecting,
Thomas M. Pilitowski
