COLONIAL COINS

One of the most vaguely defined areas of American numismatics is that of Colonial Coinage. For starters, the time frame that defines these Colonial Coins is mostly undefined, and different people have different opinions. Some consider all the pieces that were struck in the United States from the 17th century until the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Some add world coins which circulated in the colonies; others add pieces struck up to the early 19th century but which are still related to the colonial period. A true definition does not exist, which makes the collecting of Colonial Coins an exciting specialty which every collector fills in personally.

Whatever ones definition is of colonial coinage, it can roughly be divided into multiple groups. The first are coins which were struck in the colonies and circulated there. There are pieces which were struck in Europe but intended for circulation in the colonies of America. Add to that a whole array of world coins (mostly European) from the 16th century and later which are known to have circulated in the United States. Finally, the scene of Colonial Coins is completed with coins and tokens which historically have been linked to colonial America. Some of these, however, have absolutely nothing to do with this interesting period of history and are purely collected alongside the true Colonial Coins because of numismatic tradition.
