Among the most popular of the smaller silver coinage, Dimes, or ten cent pieces have been struck in various quantities since 1796. More or less continuously struck until today, this denomination played an important role in the American economy. Dimes were struck using many different designs, and every type is separately collected. Complete sets of all Dimes, containing many rarities, are also actively collected, but thanks to the rarity of many pieces seldom completed. Many of the earlier issues are extremely rare in high grade, sometimes unknown at the uncirculated level, and many of the 19th century Dimes are very rare in any grade as well.
Assembling sets of Dimes can be an exciting collecting challenge, and a task which often needs a full lifetime to complete. As with other denominations, many high grade Dimes lack eye-appeal, and extensive searching is often necessary to find the right, original piece. When found however, and when sets of Dimes are completed, they often make for a magnificent display which will attract a lot of attention from fellow collectors. On the other hand, thanks to the popularity of this denomination, investors will be able to gain a healthy profit from investing in Dimes, as many issues have seen rising prices which have continued despite the state of the economy.
