1853-O Double Eagle (1853-O $20) NGC AU58. 1853-O $20 Liberty Head, Without Motto on Reverse, Double Eagle NGC AU58. Out of a substantial original mintage of 71,000 pieces, it is estimated that only 350-400 of these have survived to this day. Most commonly found in VF-XF grades, this desirable early New Orleans Mint double eagle is a serious challenge in AU58 and all but unknown in MS60+ with only 5 pieces being graded as such by PCGS/NGC respectively. As expected, there is serious price escalation in the mint state grades as well, quickly ascending into the mid to upper five figures.

The luscious example offered here is a wisp away from being the sixth member of that elusive mint state club. Possibly the finest AU58 graded piece from this date, this coin has it all. Unlike the majority of 1853-O $20 specimens which are softly struck through the middle, this piece has a bold strike and excellent detail. The extremely clean and mark free yellow/orange surfaces ooze with rich luster. Only the slightest rubs keep this coin from achieving a significantly higher grade. A truly breathtaking PQ+++ piece!
