This pre-Civil War double eagle is very scarce in any grade with less than 100 estimated to survive of the original mintage of 9,100. Out of that number, just 2 have been graded as Mint State by PCGS/NGC respectively and most examples seen are in the VF-XF grades. Ever in demand, this is the 3rd rarest date double eagle issued by the branch Mint in New Orleans.

This example displays a delightful yellow gold hue, moderate wear, and only very minor marks which are not distracting. Though graded “Genuine” by PCGS due to evidence of a light cleaning, this coin has notable detail and wonderful eye appeal sure to please the discriminating collector. Seldom seen, this is a date that warrants serious consideration and is rarely offered except in the largest auctions or finest dealer inventories.
