1861-S
Double Eagle PCGS AU58. With a mintage of 768,000 pieces
this issue is not hard to find in lower grades. In upper
AU, and especially in Mint-State this example is much
scarcer, and tend to be lacking much eye-appeal. The
present coin however, is very lustrous and a premium
quality, about uncirculated example of this issue.
The Civil War commenced in 1861, and
as a result of this and the specie redemption act, all
silver and gold were hoarded. The Philadelphia issues
of these years were all widely hoarded and are easily
acquired in Mint State. In the western states and territories,
the influence was rather small, and the output of the
San Francisco Mint remained at par. These issues did
circulate, and now many San Francisco coins struck in
the Civil War are frequently encountered in circulated
grades but are scarce to rare in Mint State.
The present offering is a near-miss
Mint State coin. Only the slightest luster breaks are
seen on the highest points, either from short circulation
or just cabinet friction. Very lustrous with original
light orange gold color. The reverse is especially nice,
and has the looks of much higher quality. This is a
premium quality piece at a fraction of the cost of an
uncirculated example.
