1862-S
Double Eagle NGC AU53. One of the more common Civil
War double eagles, with 854,173 pieces produced for
circulation. Examples are fairly easy located in all
grades but coins as original as the present piece are
much harder to find. Many pieces saw extensive circulation
in the western states or were mishandled in later years,
making choice examples in any grade scarce.
The present offering represents one of those choice
examples, which only saw some light circulation. Very
wholesome, with luster remaining on both sides. The
coin has slightly toned to a darker orange-green gold
color, which is very pretty to look at. No major hits
are seen in the fields on neither the obverse nor
the reverse. A wonderful and affordable double eagle
struck in the Civil War at the San Francisco Mint.
