1802/1 Quarter Eagle (1802/1 $2.5) NGC AU50, BD-3 (Bass-Dannreuther variety). Offered is a rare variety of this already popular and scarce date which is most easily identified by the repunching of the 1st star on the reverse.
The total certified population at PCGS and NGC for this coin is a mere 157 pieces with 13 in this grade and no distinction made for varieties. It should be noted that the surviving number of specimens from the original mintage of 3,035 is likely less as resubmissions most assuredly have inflated these numbers. Therefore, this is an extremely rare early gold quarter eagle.
This coin has an attractive yellow golden hue and a delightful original look. Some adjustment marks are present on the reverse which only adds to the appeal of this early gold piece as they reflect the minting techniques of the day. You will scarcely find a better example for the grade. PQ++++++.
