George T. Morgan $100 Union Silver NGC Gem Proof. Proposed Design 1876 Struck 2008. Private Issue, 1.5 Ounce Pure Silver. 1876 $100 Union Silver NGC GEM PROOF. Deeply mirrored black and white cameo surfaces are seen on this gem proof proposed design for the one hundred dollar union coin. The coin is fully struck with every detail apparent on both sides. The Union coin design was found in a George T. Morgan sketch book. They were struck by the New York Mint, a private firm, and were sold directly to the public.
The design shows a capped Liberty seated, facing right who represents commerce. She holds an olive branch in her left hand and a scepter in the right, with stalks of wheat to her right that are wrapped in ribbon. In the background there is a sailing ship coming into a harbor with mountains behind it. The coin weighs 1.5 ounces and is made of .999 fine silver.
