1831 50C (1831 Half Dollar) NGC EF40. This Capped Bust half dollar has original surfaces which are, except for a small mark next to star 10, free of distractions. The coin shows toning as expected, which is darker towards the periphery. It is tan, grey, and silver with touches of lavender, gold, and purple. The clasp on the left shoulder is sharp. The hair above the clasp shows a trace of wear.
The rest of the curls show considerable detail. The motto is partially worn, in keeping with the grade. Clash marks are seen on both sides of the coin. Designed by John Reich, the coin depicts Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap facing left surrounded by thirteen stars. The reverse shows a heraldic eagle also facing left with olive branch and arrows, the symbols of peace and preparedness. The coin is an R 3 which means it is scarce with 200 to 500 of this die pairing known.
One of only 2 in XF40 to receive approval from CAC as of 1/27/2011.
