1864 50C AU50 PCGS. PCGS Population (2/65). One of the nicest about uncirculated 1864 half dollars you'll ever find. 1864 Seated Liberty 50c, PCGS AU50. As the Civil War entered its fourth year of bloody conflict, it was becoming more and more apparent that the Union would be preserved and the long road of reconstruction would have to be traveled. At the time, hoarding of hard money such as federal silver coinage was in full effect as paper currency was being rejected by a war-weary population. This fine example likely owes its level of preservation to these factors.
The piece offered possesses a hammered strike and pleasing steel gray coloration. Hints of luster remain about the devices. A total certified population of just 165 pieces in any grade makes this a scarce issue and seemingly undervalued at current levels. With the approach of the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, coinage from that era is increasingly in favor and with such modest supply points to an attractive opportunity for the collector/investor.
