Perhaps the crème de la crème of all United States coins are the proof gold issues. No coin is more breathtaking to view than a deep cameo gold piece with mirrored fields and frosted devices. Proof coins, by their very nature, are presentation pieces struck for collectors rather than general coinage produced for commerce. The special efforts required to strike proof coins such as specially prepared blanks and dies and the multiple striking of each piece pay great dividends when the final product is in hand. This effect is no more pronounced than when it is produced in gleaming gold.

Proof gold coins were struck in the United States (excluding the current bullion issues) intermittently in various denominations from 1821-1915. They were usually sold by the Mint in complete sets by denomination but there is evidence to support that at times individual pieces also may have been sold as well. Premiums charged by the Mint were small over face value and the result was that during challenging economic times many of these pieces did in fact find their way into circulation. Therefore, of the surviving population of United States Proof Gold Coins there is a variance in preservation and premiums can be expected for the higher grade pieces in the same fashion they are for circulation strikes.

While many of these issues have escalated into the high five and even six figure price ranges there are still excellent opportunities for appreciation in this area of numismatics for the savvy collector/investor.
