1843-D Quarter Eagle (1843-D $2.50) Small D, NGC AU58. 1843-D $2.50 Liberty Head, Small D. The Dahlonega Mint in Georgia was established by an Act of Congress in 1835 in response to the discovery of gold in the Appalachian Mountains. From 1838-1861 the Mint produced what would become some of the most sought after gold coins in all of United States numismatics. Southern branch mint gold coins from Dahlonega hold special allure with collectors/investors and continue to benefit from strong demand making the acquisition of original and choice pieces increasingly difficult. Within this date there are two varieties known; one has a small mintmark and the other a large mintmark. This wonderfully crusty and original gold quarter eagle is of the “small D” variety. Well struck and possessing terrific definition, this lustrous “super slider” is exceptionally choice for the grade and has above average eye appeal. Whether a specialist building a fine collection of Dahlonega gold, a type collector searching for a single pristine specimen, or an investor interested in numismatic pieces with future upside potential, look no further. This superb quarter eagle is certain to please the most discriminating numismatist.
