1843-C Quarter Eagle $2.5 Large Date NGC MS61. 1843-C $2.50 Liberty Head, Large Date. Pre-Civil War gold coins produced at the southern branch mint in Charlotte, N. C. are always extremely popular with collectors. The Charlotte Mint struck gold coins from 1838-1861 when it ceased operations and was transformed by Confederate forces into a hospital. This date was produced in both a large and small date variety. While the small date version is considerably scarcer in circulated grades, both types are equally challenging to locate in uncirculated condition.
Many examples of this date are characterized by a weakly struck central obverse. However, the coin offered here is especially choice for the grade and exhibits a terrific strike. Overall the piece displays rich golden tones and is absent of any major distracting marks or blemishes. This is a truly superior specimen with above average eye appeal offered from the historic and defunct Charlotte mint
