1795 Silver Dollar - 1795 S$1 BB-51, B-14 NGC VG DETAILS. This tan and light brown 1795 silver dollar is an excellent example to illustrate the variety. The devices are light tan. The obverse fields are darker towards the rim with dark brown toning at the date, stars, and inscription. The reverse has a couple of toning spots, one just above the A in AMERICA, and two at the rim. Only the deepest folds at the bottom of Libertys drapery show. Most of the other lines of drapery are smooth. Curls are visible at the top of Libertys head and at the end of her hair, more in keeping with a higher grade. There are about a dozen small marks on Libertys cheek and in the field in front of the portrait. There is also rim dent above and to the left of the T in LIBERTY.

The BB-51 variety is identified by the bust of Liberty being placed too far to the left. The highest wave of Libertys hair is under the B in LIBERTY. The lowest curl is very distant from the date, and Star 1 touches the curl. The reverse is identified by the berry under the center of the A in STATES.

The reverse die was cut with a shallow relief and low rims. Impressions from it are flat looking as a result. The same die was used to strike coins in 1796, 1797, and 1798.

The Draped Bust, Small Eagle silver dollar was made from 1795 to 1798. The design shows a draped bust of Liberty in profile facing right with her hair tied with a ribbon. Above is the word LIBERTY, and below is the date with stars on both sides of the periphery. The portrait, taken from a drawing by the famous artist Gilbert Stuart, is of Ann Bingham. John Eckstein translated this drawing to models for Engraver Robert Scot. Evidently Eckstein lost many of the nuances, which might explain why Stuarts family would not acknowledge his role in the coinage design. Dentils are near the edge on both sides of the coin. The edge is lettered HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT with ornamentation between the words. The small eagle reverse is similar to the prior design in use. It shows a small, unrealistic eagle poised to fly standing on a rock. Around the eagle is a wreath of laurel on the left and palm on the right. A ribbon ties the ends of the wreath together. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircles the design.
