1795 Early $1 (1795 Early Silver Dollar) PCGS VF20 CAC. BB-52, B-15. This Draped Bust, Small Eagle Reverse 1795 Silver Dollar is a full VF20 showing sufficient drapery lines around the bust. The grade is confirmed by CAC, which also indicates that the coin meets stringent standards for quality. The light toning is fairly uniform on both sides and only slightly darker near the rims, more so on the reverse. The strike was evidently sharp as indicated by the strength of most of the dentils on both sides. The coin is well centered and shows reverse die cracks at the top, which are typical for the variety.

Designed by Robert Scot, the coin shows a draped bust of Liberty with her hair tied with a ribbon. The word LIBERTY is above and the date is below. Various combinations of stars were to the left and right of Liberty including 10 left and 6 right, 9 left and 7 right, 15 stars and 13 stars on the obverse. The present coin has 15 stars, 8 left and 7 right. For the first three years of the Draped Bust dollar, the small eagle reverse was used; it shows a skinny eagle perched on a wreath that is tied with a bow and surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The edge is lettered HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT with decorations between the words.

The Mint Director, Henry William DeSaussure, wished to place gold coinage in circulation and to improve the design of the other denominations especially silver. This desire is the reason he engaged Gilbert Stuart to submit a drawing for the new dollar obverse. In 1795 DeSaussure resigned his position because of illness and hostility from Congress. Many of the lawmakers wanted to abolish the Mint and continue the practice of using copper coins made at British token factories and foreign silver and gold coins. Elias Boudinot became the Mint Director after DeSaussure.

In its population report as of June, 2011, CAC shows 4 in VF20 with 18 better.
