Large Eagle, JR-1. This amazing early American silver coin is very rare and desirable to not only collectors of early coins and specifically 1790s coinage, but to the investor who is searching for true quality in a sea of mediocre coins. The overdate which is very neat is visible to the naked eye, and the drapery lines are strong. The coin has pleasant toning with light silvery devices and darker shades of grey and tan at the peripheries and is absolutely a cutie and a keeper for both fun and profit.

Designedby Robert Scot, the obverse shows a draped bust of Liberty facingright. Above is LIBERTY, and below is the date. Seven six-pointedstars are to the left and six are to the right. The large eagle orheraldic eagle reverse shows the eagle with up stretched wings and aUnion shield on its breast.

The large eagle orheraldic eagle reverse shows the eagle with up stretched wings and aUnion shield on its breast. A banner inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM curlsacross the left wing and under the right. Except for the wing tips, the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is in an arc near theperiphery. Sixteen stars are above the eagles head under theclouds in an arc pattern. Dentils are near the edge on both sides ofthe coin, and the edge is reeded.

Thereverse of this coin that has 16 stars is the same as the one usedfor the 1797 quarter eagle; however, Mint Director Boudinot realizedthat the Mint could not go on forever adding stars as new states wereadmitted to the union, and subsequent issues were made with 13 stars. There are 10 coins showing as MS-63 in the NGC census with 2/7/3higher in respective grades. There is no doubt in my mind that thereis duplication in this report that well never know the extent ofor if Im right or not but even if the census was accurate, this isa very rare coin with a growing collector and investor base as theforward march toward quality and rarity continues in the coinbusiness.
