1800 Silver Dollar (1800 S$1 Mint Error) PCGS XF40. BB-181, R-5. 3% off-center. The 1700s were trying times for the whole world. In France , daily guillotine executions occurred as the country struggled to create a set of democratic principles to run by. As political upheaval continued in France , Americans watched nervously from across the Atlantic , hoping the turmoil would not spread to the United States .

This would never occur as the United States democratic principles were firmly established. In 1795, a new coin press was delivered to the Philadelphia Mint, marking the coming of age of United States coinage. The press made improvements possible both in the quantity of coins produced as well as their quality. The new press was able to properly stamp out the large sized dollar coins and include all the design details in the finished product. Gilbert Stuart was commissioned to design the Draped Bust Dollar in an attempt to advance United States coinage to world class stature. Stuart is best known for the unfinished portrait of George Washington that is sometimes referred to as The Athenaeum, which was begun in 1796 and left incomplete at the time of Stuart's death in 1828. The image of George Washington featured in the painting has appeared on the United States one-dollar bill for over a century.

Over the six years that the Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle dollars were minted, over 1.1 million coins were produced, all at the Philadelphia mint. Dollar production stopped after 1804 as silver dollars had began to be pulled from circulation due to their high intrinsic value. It wasnt until Mint director, R.M. Patterson, ordered engraver Christian Gobrecht to prepare a new pair of dies for a new dollar coin, the Gobrecht Dollar, which was struck from 1836-1839.

The example that is featured is an absolutely spectacular one, graded XF-40 by PCGS, this coin exhibits an off center strike of 3%, further adding to its rarity.. The wear is smooth and even and the surfaces are above average for a coin of this grade. The vast amount of history that this 210 year old coin possesses is astonishing and it can surely be the centerpiece of anyones collection.
