1800P JF COLOMBIA 8E NGC MS61, KM # 62.2. This Mint State gold 1800 8 Escudo piece has original mint luster within protected areas. The surfaces are original and clean for the grade with no notable abrasion marks or other distractions. The coin is well struck on its peripheries and above average in its centers. There is slight doubling under the kings chin and at the back of his head.

The design shows a uniformed bust of Charles IV facing right in profile. The inscription is CAROL.IIII.D.G. HISP. ET IND.R. with the date below. The reverse shows the crowned Hapsburg arms within a chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The reverse inscription is IN.UTROQ.FELIX. AUSPICE. DEO.  The mintmark is at the lower left and the assayers initials are at the lower right, separated by the fleece.

Charles IV was King of Spain (and Colombia) from 1788 until his abdication in 1808. He became King after the death of his father and intended to maintain his fathers policies. While he kept up the appearance of an absolute monarchy, he was a passive leader leaving the affairs of government to his wife, Maria Luisa, and his prime minister. In 1792 political enemies of the king replaced the prime minister with the Count of Aranda. However, as a result of the war against France, he was replaced by Manuel de Godoy, a favorite of the Queen, who also enjoyed the favor of the King. Wars with France caused economic troubles. Rumors about a sexual relationship between the Queen and Godoy, and the Kings ineptitude caused the monarchy to decline in popularity. In 1807 Crown Prince Ferdinand attempted a coup. It was unsuccessful, but in 1808 the King abdicated in favor of Ferdinand.

In its population report, NGC shows this coin, 1800 P JF 8 Escudos tied with one other for the finest known at MS61.
