1801 Eagle NGC MS61 - 1801 $10 NGC MS61. T-25, BD-2, R-2. A very scarce 1801 Eagle in a lovely uncirculated grade, this coin is perfect for an advanced type or date set. Certified by NGC in a new holder it remains in uncirculated condition, and is seldom offered as such. One of two die varieties for 1800 eagles, using new obverse and reverse dies. The obverse die was retired after striking this variety, as it is known to exist in only two varieties.

The reverse die would be used again for one 1803 variety used some time later. Early American gold coinage is one of the most eye-catching fields of numismatics, and many people consider the large Ten dollar denomination to be among the most important of all. Struck from 1795 to 1804, these large gold coins are the cornerstone of the American monetary system. Yet, at their time, few people saw these coins in circulation as the majority were exported overseas and later melted. Obviously, because of their high intrinsic value circulation was extremely limited, and Ten dollars was a huge amount for an ordinary family at the early 19th century. The existence of this coin, as such, was just a matter of pure luck.

Fully uncirculated, both sides still show abundant luster after more than 200 years.
