1806/5 50c (1806/5 Half Dollar) NGC XF45. Brown Collection. This Early 1806/5 Half Dollar has light obverse central devices and is darker toward the rims. The reverse is more uniformly light with some medium toning towards the rims. The obverse periphery is a sandy-copper iridescence while the rest of the surfaces are silver-white. Some mint luster still remains within the protected areas of both sides. The grade is confirmed by the presence of all the lines in the drapery on Libertys bust and the strongly outlined and well detailed hair. The obverse strike is strong in the central portions, and the reverse is strong at the peripheries. The dentils are well struck on both sides.

The Draped Bust half dollar of 1796 to 1807 was designed by Robert Scot. It showed a new portrait of a buxom Liberty with some of her hair tied back. In 1801 the Heraldic Eagle Reverse was used until 1807. It showed the eagle facing left holding arrows and olive branch in the wrong talons. The eagles right talon should be holding the olive branch. Instead it holds the arrows. The eagles wings are outstretched, and above its head are 13 stars and clouds. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is on a banner in front of the eagles right wing and behind the left. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the design. . The denomination is on the edge of the coin as FIFTY CENTS OR A HALF DOLLAR. Decorations are between the words.

Robert Scot was responsible for designs of most of Americas first coins. These include the Flowing Hair and the Draped Bust motifs used on the early silver coins, and the gold quarter eagle, half eagle and eagle. Scot also designed the 1794-1797 half cent, the 1800-1808 draped bust half cent, and the Thomas Jefferson Indian Peace Medal. Scot died on November 1, 1823 and was succeeded by William Kneass as Chief Engraver.
