1836 Reeded Edge 50C NGC MS62. The capped bust design as executed by Christian Gobrecht. Traditionally listed with a mintage of 1,200 pieces, this number is now disputed as the number of survivors seems to be too high for this reported mintage. Occasionally considered to be a pattern, and listed in the Judd book (J-57, R-2) newer editions now note that this, in fact, is an issue struck for regular circulation. As proof, most of the survivors are in VF and EF grades indicating regular circulated in the 1830s.

The premier coin struck on a steam powered press, the issue has been popular since these were struck. As a result, more than a handful pieces were probably saved as souvenirs by Mint workers. However, with the demand for these coins, uncirculated pieces are few and far between. The 2nd Philadelphia brought many improvements to the US mint, and the introduction of the steam powered press was one of them. This and other improvements were introduced after Franklin Peale returned from a 2 year trip to Europe.

The capped bust design used on this design was copied from the original design made by John Reich in 1807. Several differences in the execution are noted on the obverse. On the reverse, the denomination is spelled out as 50 Cents, and not as 50 C as was the case with the lettered edge half dollar. Struck with a reeded edge, these are true pieces of art.

Graded MS-62 by NGC, the present piece is a lovely toned coin. Some scattered marks account for the grade given by NGC. No major marks show on either side. Satin luster is visible under toning highlighted by shades of green, blue and rose. An original coin of this ever popular issue with a low mintage.
