1840 Half Eagle (1840 $5) Broad Mill, NGC MS61. This lovely 1840 half eagle is quite lustrous, especially so through Libertys hair and the devices on the reverse. The coin is free of distracting bag marks or scuffs and is appropriately graded. It is well struck for the date. In 1839 Christian Gobrechts new design for the eagle was released.
It is similar to his Coronet Head seen on Large Cents of 1839 to 1857. The reverse shows the Heraldic Eagle, modified from the Reich-Kneass design. Gobrecht wrote the denomination as FIVE D., instead of using the abbreviation for the amount as on the previous design.
In 1840, the coin was slightly modified to produce the Second Head. The Broad Mill, which is a subtype, has very fine edge reeding. It is scarce in all grades and especially so in mint state.
The NGC population report shows 12 with 9 finer.
