1846 $10 (1846 Eagle) NGC AU50. Traces of bright mint luster are found within the devices of this 1846 Gold Eagle. Light wear and light abrasion keep this coin from a mint state grade. The strike is average with central weakness seen on both sides of the piece. The Coronet Eagle Liberty Head No Motto shows Liberty facing left wearing a LIBERTY inscribed coronet with her hair tied in the back in beads. Two long curls hang down her neck, one in the back and the other on the side. She is surrounded with thirteen six-pointed stars. The date is below the truncation, which shows no drapery. The motif was used with modifications for the Large Cents of 1839.

The reverse shows a heraldic eagle with outstretched wing looking to the left. On its chest is the Union shield. In its talons it holds the olive branch and arrows. Except for the tips of the eagles wings UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the reverse, separated from the denomination TEN D. by dots. Dentils are near the periphery on both sides of coin, and the edge is reeded.

With an original mintage of 20,095, the 1846 eagle is one of the better dates in the series. Only 88 have been encapsulated by NGC in all grades. Similarly, PCGS has certified only 67, and these numbers do not account for resubmissions or crossovers.
