1858-C Quarter Eagle NGC MS62. One of only an estimated 10 pieces known, in uncirculated, from the small mintage of 9,056 pieces. At one time, this issue was considered to be a prime rarity in uncirculated grades, but a few more examples have turned up during the last decade. Yet, it remains to be a very hard issue to find in any grade above extremely fine.

Mintage of quarter eagles at the Charlotte mint was very limited in the late 1850s. No quarter eagles were produced at the North-Carolina Mint in 1857 and 1859, which resulted in heavy circulation of the 1858-C quarter eagle. Together with the limited number of coins that has remained unmessed with, this issue is very hard to find with any originality still remaining.

Southern-gold is an area of numismatics that has recently brought up a lot of attention. As a result, prices of high-grade coins have gone up, but no new discoveries of hoards have been announced. As a result, the supply has stayed the same, and with a lack of interest due to the current economy this is a very good time to buy investor coins as these. With more research books published on southern-gold during the next few years, these issues are destined to go up in price. For collectors seeking a diverse portfolio, this coin could be an excellent opportunity.

The present coin is a true uncirculated coin, with full luster showing on both sides. Both sides are remarkably well struck, a seldom seen feature of a coin that Breen noted as weak in centers. The highest graded pieces are less than a handful pieces graded as MS-63s, making this one of the top examples of this issue. A rare opportunity to acquire this Charlotte rarity in Mint State!
