1859-D $2.50 (1859-D Quarter Eagle) NGC AU58 CAC. Offered here is a wonderful, near uncirculated example of the last Dahlonega 1859-D Quarter Eagle minted. A very popular coin for its status, this issue is scarce to rare in the higher circulated grades. The population reports are virtually worthless for this issue, as many of the numbers represent the same coin which has been submitted multiple times to obtain a coveted mint state grade. True offerings of original coins, however, are rare, and should always be considered when collecting a Dahlonega or quarter eagle set. Uncirculated coins of this issue are very rare, and would have a much higher price than the present offering, which is of premium quality.

Like the other Southern Mints coins minted at the Dahlonega Mint have seen an increase in demand for truly original coins. These original coins, however, have become increasingly hard to find as well, as many have been dipped, cleaned or otherwise damaged since they were minted. As such, a truly original 1859-D quarter eagle, as we offer here, is a true rarity in any grade. This issue had a total mintage of just 2,244 coins, and as such the overall supply in any grade is very low.

The present specimen only has minor friction on the highest points which keeps it out of an uncirculated holder. Both sides have premium fields, with few marks, none of them major. The strike, especially for a coin produced in Dahlonega is sharp, and no other blemishes are noted. The color is slightly orange-yellow, with nearly full luster visible on both the obverse and reverse. This coin has been stickered by CAC and would make for a good addition to any gold collection of a smart investment for the conscious investor with a varied portfolio of gold coins.
