1860 SS Republic Double Eagle NGC AU58. Choice uncirculated Treasure ship gold (Blue Tag) from the SS Republic. Found in the wreckage of the S.S. Republic and now offered in a special holder and box, this near uncirculated 1860 double eagle is one of the finest circulated examples of this date. Near full, brilliant luster prevails on both sides, with only the slightest hint of circulation on the highest points. This date had a total mintage of 577,670 pieces, most which circulated heavily (making this issue easily available in VF and EF grades), and less than a hundred examples were discovered in the S.S. Republic.

The story of the S.S. Republic has been well publicized since the wreckage was discovered in 2003. Build 150 years earlier, it was launched as the S.S. Tennessee, seized by the Confederate government, who renamed it C.S.S. Tennesse, and after the war renamed again, albeit shortly, to USS Mobile. Finally, after it was returned to civilian service it was named the S.S. Republic, a name which is now linked to one of the greatest treasures ever discovered in an American shipwreck.

The S.S. Republic, carrying at least $400,000 worth of recently minted gold and silver coins, sank 100 miles of the coast of Georgia on October 25. Most of the approximately 100 passengers survived, although a number drowned. All the coins, however, were doomed to be lost forever, until it was discovered and publicized in August of 2003 by the Odyssey Marine Exploration, who brought the coins back to survive. Literally, they had been in a time capsule for almost 140 years, and were silent survivors of a turbulent time in American history, shortly after the American Civil War.

The present coin is one of those pieces, offered to you in a special holder and wooden box with accompanying booklets. The whole display looks extremely nice, and sure would be a highlight in any collection. The coin itself, as previously mentioned, is very lustrous with only the slightest luster breaks on the highest points. It has been carefully preserved before grading, revealing its choice surfaces with only limited bagmarks. No major blemishes are worth to be mentioned, and the eye-appeal of this sun-yellow double eagle is exceptional. A great coin of a scarce coin in this grade with a very special pedigree.
