1861 Eagle (1861 $10) $10 NGC AU58. Ex-SS Republic (blue tag). Civil War shipwreck treasure. This sharply detailed, shipwrecked 1861 eagle has lustrous surfaces. A few small scratches and abrasion marks are seen on both sides of the coin. There is only a trace of wear on the highest points of Libertys hair and the eagles wingtips, consistent with the grade. The strike is sharp and clear especially so on the reverse.

In 1865 following the Civil War, the treasure ship S.S. Republic sank in a hurricane off the coast of Savannah. In 2003 the Odyssey Republic Expedition, after twelve years of searching, discovered and began the recovery of the ships treasure. The S.S. Republics cargo contained many different types of gold coins including double eagles, eagles, such as the present coin, and half eagles. The blue NGC tag was used exclusively for coins from the Republic.

With a mintage of 1,283,788 one might think the coin to be common; however, in its population report NGC has certified only 585 coins is all grades.
