1861 Eagle (1861 $10) $10 NGC AU58. Ex-SS Republic (blue tag). Civil War shipwreck treasure. Generous luster remains on the devices of this gleaming shipwrecked eagle. The strike is full and sharp on both sides of the coin. Small scattered marks show on the surfaces of this coin and there is a trace of wear on the high points, in keeping with the grade. Unlike the coins recovered from other shipwrecks, the S.S. Republics cargo contained many different types of gold coins including double eagles, eagles, such as the present coin, and half eagles. The blue NGC tag was used exclusively for coins from the Republic.

In 1865 following the Civil War, the treasure ship S.S. Republic sank in a hurricane off the coast of Savannah. In 2003 the Odyssey Republic Expedition, after twelve years of searching, discovered and began the recovery of the ships treasure. The cargo of riches had lain for 138 years approximately 100 miles off the coast of Georgia. Lost Gold of the Republic, a film produced by National Geographic documents the discovery and subsequent recovery of the treasure.
