1861 Gold Dollar (1861 G$1) ANACS AU55. Civil War 1861 One Dollar Gold. Warm mint luster glows from the devices of this Large Head Civil War 1861 Gold Dollar. Aside from some light surface abrasion, in keeping with the grade, the coin is clean and fresh looking. The strike is average with some central weakness on the obverse as well as on the knot and upper left leaves.

In April of 1861, the Confederacy seized the Mint at Dahlonega, Georgia. The D mintmarked coins were made under rebel authority. The 1861 unmintmarked coins of Philadelphia, such as the present coin, were made under Union authority. Shortly after this coin was issued, it probably disappeared from circulation as did nearly all gold, silver, and eventually even copper-nickel cents. Privately minted tokens were issued to fill the need for circulating coinage.
