1862 Eagle (1862 $10) NGC AU55 CAC. Civil War Date. 1862 $10 Liberty Head, No Motto. As hopes for a quick resolution faded and the divided nation settled into bloody struggle, a nervous population began hoarding hard money (gold and silver coins). As a result, the United States Mint responded by reducing the mintage of coins and the eagle saw a fairly robust mintage of 113,164 in 1861 drop to just 10,960 in 1862.

An unintended consequence was the creation of a numismatic scarcity that would be avidly sought by collectors and investors nearly 150 years later. With just 25 in grade and 23 pieces graded higher at PCGS/NGC respectively, this issue is one of the rarest eagles produced by the Philadelphia Mint and is difficult to locate across all grades. Rarer still are the amount of coins that have qualified at CAC for the green sticker. This is the only specimen of the 1862 Eagle in AU-55 that has to date (3/29/10 ) qualified to have one.

The example offered here has it all. It is very well struck and wonderfully original. The devices are sharp and the fields are absent of notable abrasions or blemishes. Frosty luster still remains and the greenish gold coloring gives the piece a magnificent and wholesome eye appeal. CAC has reviewed and approved this coin as being premium for the grade as well. If there is a finer specimen certified within this grade wed love to see it!! This is most certainly a PQ+++ offering of an extremely desirable and scarce Civil War gold eagle.
