Struck in the middle of the American Civil War, the 1862 half dime had a mintage of 1,492,000 pieces. This is not extremely low, but finding another example this nice would be an extremely difficult task. While not extremely rare or hard to find in high grade, the majority of mint state survivors will be white, often dipped or have very dull toning. Finding a truly original example with full and wild color is very difficult, especially when it is such an historic date as the present example.
