1863-S Quarter Eagle (1863-S $2.5), NGC VF30 CAC. Many Civil War coins struck at the San Francisco Mint are extremely undervalued. The present offering represents such a piece. In the middle of the American Civil War, the San Francisco Mint only struck 10,800 pieces for circulation. Most, including this piece, entered circulation and remained there for at least some period of time. No more than 80 pieces are known to exist, at most, in all grades, and that is the highest estimate usually found.

As a whole series, the Liberty quarter eagles first produced in 1840 are not much collected. Produced continuously at several Mints for 67 years, the total number of varieties is large than most other US coin types. As such, prices have remained relatively low, except for the finest known for each date and Mint. The careful collector, however, will notice that some issues, such as the 1863-S are extremely hard to find. As such, one does not have to be a specialist of the series to guess what will happen when these Civil War dates become popular.

This is a wonderful example for the grade, relatively mark free. From the noticeably amount of detail, it seems obvious that this coin was carefully produced. Fair amounts of both hair and feathers on both sides are still visible, giving it a premium quality grade. To certify this, the coin has also been stickered by CAC for exceptional quality. A wonderful coin, dated in the Civil War and with a very low mintage.
