1867 $20 Double Eagle NGC MS61. Certified by NGC in a new holder, this very lustrous reconstruction period double eagle is of premium quality and boasts excellent eye-appeal. 251,015 double eagles were minted at the Philadelphia Mint, but the majority is said to have been exported overseas, and reportedly, later melted. Some groups, as per Garrett & Guth have been discovered, but the majority of these are now strongly held as type coins or in specialized double eagle sets. As such, an uncirculated example of this date should not be considered to be a common coin which is easily acquired.

The present coin would make for an excellent addition to an advanced type set, representing the relatively scarce type two Liberty double eagle. Minted only from 1866 to 1876, with a large number of scarce to extremely rare issues, this type is not as easily acquired as some of the type one or type two dates are. This year represented the second year of mintage for this type, and the first year that this was the only type struck at the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints.

As previously mentioned, the present coin is highly lustrous and has extremely lustrous. While the grade usually indicates heavily abraded surfaces, these are rather minimal on this coin and the excellent eye-appeal easily rivals these minor marks. A strong strike on the now slightly darker yellow toned surfaces indicate a truly uncirculated and original coin, which supposedly spent a long time in a Mint bag, being transferred from bank to bank. We can now offer it at a very good price for inclusion in your set of American gold coinage struck shortly after the Civil War.
