1870-S $20 NGC AU-55 The 1870-S double eagle had a fair mintage of nearly a million coins. Yet, examples are not widely encountered in higher grades, as many were exported and subsequently melted. The small number that did survive in the United States saw a fair amount of circulation and most pieces of this date trade for little above gold value in lower grades. About uncirculated examples are scarce, and anything higher than that is a rarity.

The present piece obviously spent a short time in circulation, limiting the grade to AU-55. Yet, abundant luster remains in the protected areas, giving the coin a fresh look. All stars still show their full radial lines, indicating that the coin was generally well struck. A great coin for the specialist seeking a premium quality example of this date!
